Whether you want to share sensitive information or just wish to ensure your conversations remain private, a text encryption tool can certainly come in handy. Thankfully, there are plenty of novice-friendly, open-source apps that you can rely on.

One of them is Encoding, an aptly-named application that enables you to encrypt plain text using multiple popular algorithms. It is a very simple tool, but also portable and easy to use.

Since the program does not need to installed on your PC, you can launch it from any location and even place the executable file on a portable storage device. As long as the host computer meets the software requirements, this is a great app to be used on the go.

Instructions shouldn’t really be necessary, but it is worth pointing out that no English documentation is available. However, most users are unlikely to run into any issues.

We mentioned that a user manual isn’t that important, and that is because the program is remarkably simple to use. Granted, it doesn’t offer any advanced features, but a bare-bones encryption app is just what many are looking for.

Essentially, you only need to enter the text to be encrypted or decrypted in the top panel, select the algorithm and click Encode or Decode. If you use a symmetric algorithm, you will also need to enter the key.

Encoding is quite versatile, as it supports the following algorithms: MD5, SHA1, SHA256, SHA384, SHA512, DES, Triple DES, AES, RC2.

When it comes down to it, Encoding is only designed to provide you with a simple way to encrypt and decrypt text, and it does this well. As long as you do not need more advanced features, this application should to the job just fine.
