With more and more services asking you to create an account accessible only by a security key, it can get pretty hard to remember all of them, and writing them down in a plain text document is risky. Luckily, there are various applications like Bytessence PasswordManager that give you the possibility to store all of them in a safe environment.

It only takes a little while to get the application installed on your computer, with the possibility to run it right afterwards. However, it hasn’t been updated in quite some time, and if you want to run it on recent Windows builds, you need to use compatibility settings. Don’t worry, this only needs to be done with the installer.

Once the application runs, a pretty compact main window shows up, but it can be resized for more comfort. The visual design is pretty intuitive, with a side panel that lets you easily navigate through created containers and folders, while all entries are shown in a larger panel when accessing a specific folder. There’s also an upper toolbar fitted with all sorts of management options.

Bytessence PasswordManager works with containers, and you need to create one in order to store anything. When saved, you’re asked for a location to deploy the file, as well as a password so only you have access to that specific set of credentials stored inside.

Adding a new entry brings up a new small window where you get to fill in a set of details like account, user name, password with confirmation, URL, and comments. There’s also a built-in password generator you can launch from the button that’s next to the corresponding field, letting you create security keys using various characters, both numerical and alphabetic.

The application lets you quickly use data inside stored entries, without having to actually open the set. Accessing the context menu lets you copy all details, and even launch the URL, if properly written down.

Bytessence PasswordManager manages to live up to expectations, putting a strong vault at your disposal where you can safely store all your credentials, without ever having to worry you forgot a password for a specific account. Customization options are decent, for both the interface, as well as entries themselves, while various other tools let you generate passwords and easily use data stored inside containers.
