Rogue USB devices like the Rubber Ducky or LAN Turtle are relatively easy to acquire and can cause a lot of damage when plugged into your PC.
Beamgun is a small, open-source program that runs in the background and scans for inserted USB devices. When it detects one, it can block keystrokes from fake keyboards or disable any inserted USB LAN adapters.
If you aren’t familiar with them, USB Rubber Duckies are USB devices that are recognized by your PC as keyboards, allowing them to deploy pre-programmed keystroke payloads once inserted.
Beamgum monitors your PC for any new keyboards and immediately blocks all keystrokes until it is reset. The program can lock your computer when it detects that a new device has been inserted.
LAN Turtles are seemingly regular USB devices that are registered as network adapters. Using one of these devices, an attacker can get remote access to your machine, steal credentials and install web-based backdoors in HTTP caches.
When Beamgun detects that one of these devices has been inserted, it disables the LAN adapter automatically.
Once installed, the application is minimized to the system tray, where it runs quietly until a new USB device is detected. It will be launched automatically at system startup, and you can disable the program temporarily at any time.
Beamgun logs all events, allowing you to review its actions later on. When an alert is generated, you will have to reset the application in order to hide the main window and unblock the inserted device.
Overall, Beamgun is a simple-to-use, unobtrusive utility that can block USB devices like Rubber Duckies and LAN Turtles. It is easy to set up and can disable these devices instantly when it they are plugged into your PC to prevent malicious actions.
