Alice Versions

Alice Versions provides a backup system for Office documents, allowing you to save copies of previous file versions and get them back whenever necessary. The purpose is to help you get back original versions of a file, prior to any modifications you or other users might have done.

Before launching the application, you are prompted to select the types of files that Alice Versions will automatically backup. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files are supported, meaning the array of compatible formats is pretty generous. Despite the fact that a drop-down menu is available to select the backup destination, the local computer is the only available option.

The main interface is simplistic, with a rather unpolished look. There are three available options, namely Alice versions, the built-in search and the Recycle Bin. In other words, the application can also act as a search tool. However, keep in mind that no filters are available aside from the file name.

Alice Versions detects compatible Office documents automatically and allows you to view them in a list where you can sort them by the date of the last modification and their path. Right-clicking on a file allows you to open it with the associated program or view a list of all its modifications.

Alice Versions logs changes you made to a file and displays the date and the time of the modification. With the click of a button, you can launch Microsoft Word to compare the contents of the modified document with the original file. PDF documents are automatically made editable by Word.

Right-clicking on any modified files allows you to save that file version on your computer.

The concept behind the Alice Versions application is definitely interesting. However, its implementation is rather rough. While it provides fast file search and version backups, there is a lot of work to be done to make the application stand out and work its way to the users’ computers.
