Unless you are extremely organized and usually place all your files in separate folders, you might end up having to deal with an overwhelming clutter on your computer. Taking care of the mess is tedious and, although it would be more efficient on the long term, there is a more convenient solution to categorize all your files and find them easier. It is called Documan.

Documan makes it possible for you to create different categories for data stored on your hard drives, making file management a lot easier if the files are not sorted. The files are kept in the same location but you can easily find them in their corresponding Documan category.

Its interface is pretty straightforward, although it might give you the sensation that it has been created with a deadline in mind. You get two drop-down lists and a few buttons in a rather negligent layout but everything works, although not in the most efficient way.

The first thing you need to do is to create your categories. After naming them, all should be visible in the drop-down list. In turn, each category can be populated with any number of documents of any type. For instance, you can create a section for Office documents, one for music, while images can have their own category. Don’t forget to hit the “Save” button once you are done as you might lose your organizational scheme otherwise.

It is possible to rename and remove categories from Documan, as it is possible to remove documents and add new ones whenever you want to. Nevertheless, you cannot move or copy files between categories, which would come in handy in certain situations.

Documan features in-app search capabilities, which enables you to quickly find files, even if your categories host a large number of documents. Selecting a file from the drop-down list opens it using the default program in Windows.

Documan is built upon a good idea but the implementation is rather sloppy. The lack of a modern-looking interface with all the options at hand is probably one of the most noticeable of its drawbacks.

However, the concept behind it is interesting so, with a little work to add much-needed features, it could become a good application. Tree-like view for faster access, in-application preview of a category’s content and of the documents (or at least some), one-window working area (e.g. the Settings are opened in a separate window), migration of files between categories, all of these are just a few suggestions to make Documan a really appealing application.
