Needless to say that a computer knows what types of file it’s handling because of corresponding sets of information. However, some are fitted with special info sets known as metadata, which simply describe the extension in a readable manner. Moreover, File Metadata gives you the possibility to attach metadata handlers to any extension.

Following the steps of the installer takes little time and effort on your behalf, letting you run the program right afterwards. Note, however, that it requires .NET Framework to function, but it’s usually delivered as a default feature in modern Windows iterations.

In order to be able to access file extension and to include new information sets, the application runs with administrator privileges. Don’t worry, the actual functionality of file formats which are about to be edited remains intact, because the application only reads and attaches information sets.

On the bright side of things, the application comes with a powerful database of handlers and related info. This makes it a lot easier to add handlers to new extensions. The main window of the association manager displays a list of all known formats, associated handlers, as well as preview panel, info tips, and the details tab you find in the default Properties panel.

Adding metadata for an extension is a pretty intuitive operation, especially since the side panel is also fitted with descriptions. There are a couple of predefined property sets, but the application also allows you to create custom ones, just in case you only want particular fields to appear. It might prove a little tricky at first, but creating profiles is easy to master.

Metadata handlers can also be removed from existing files, again without having an impact on file functionality. For changes to be visible on the spot, there’s a function to instantly restart File Explorer.

Taking everything into consideration, we can state that File Metadata comes together with a set of tools in order to easily manage metadata handlers in most, if not all file formats. You can remove existing ones, add to new extensions from preset profiles, or create custom profiles the way you want them to be.

What's new in File Metadata 1.6:

  • The changes from version 1.5 are fixes and feature enhancements as follows:
  • Fix Association Manager crash when adding handlers to certain extensions (issue #69, issue #78)
  • In Association Manager, add the display of property display names and the ability to search property names to the Custom Profiles page (issue #70)
  • Introduce 'Profile Only' support for cases where Windows will not allow one of its built-in property handlers to be extended (issue #72, issue #56, issue #36, issue #25). The Association Manager detects affected extensions automatically and applies the selected profile while leaving the Windows handler intact. The extension is then marked as Profile + <Windows handler>, and Remove Handler removes only the applied profile. Typically, using Explorer to edit properties added in the profile then succeeds (although this depends on the support provided by the Windows property handler for saving arbitrary properties), but the property values are saved in the file itself, and not the alternate stream used by the File Meta property handler. The Windows Explorer context menu to export metadata therefore exports properties from the file in these cases. Import and delete context menu commands are removed to avoid affecting properties not owned by File Metadata. Command line support for association management as also been updated appropriately. For a discussion of the affected extensions, and restrictions on which properties can be saved, see here.
