File Slicer

Some ten years ago, disk space and file distribution were still handled cautiously, especially because of limited space on removable drives, or disks. It was then large files had to be split accordingly to fit on more storage devices, and doing so required, and still requires applications like File Slicer.

A major advantage is it comes in a lightweight package which doesn’t require an installation process, thus can be carried around on a USB flash drive to easily split files on other PCs. Another consequence of portability is that registries remain intact during, and after usage, meaning the target computer’s health status remains intact.

Everything you get to work with is found in a pretty compact main window, split into a few sections to make it easy to identify general functions. Unfortunately, you need to rely on the browse dialog for the splitter, and reverse, with no option to split files directly from the context menu, or by dragging them over the main window.

The operation itself is configured only through one options, having a considerable impact on practicality. The application lets you configure size of chunks, and the value needs to be written down in KB, with no thousand delimiters, so it can get frustrating for extra large files to be split in large chunks.

It’s a disappointing lack of options to choose from that might make you look for alternatives. You can’t choose the number of parts to create instead, and there no presets to make parts fit on specific disks of fixed size.

On the other hand, process speed is decent, and even if you target a large file to chop in multiple small parts, all goes well. Bundling them back together needs to be done from the main window as well. A simple browse dialog lets you select one of the components, with the process triggered right after selection.

Taking everything into consideration, we can say that File Slicer doesn’t quite bring anything new on the block, and the process itself is pretty shallow, leaving more to be desired overall. It can get difficult to configure size for large files, while the lack of other split methods, such as number of parts, or disk specifications can quickly make you look for alternatives.
