Beng organized can go a long way, and that also applies to working on the computer. Organizing your files can help you access them faster, thus making for smoother workflows in the end. Naming schemes are a good way to do so, but where do you even start?

Regardless of how many files you’re working with, a batch renaming utility can be useful all the same. That’s the premise behind FileNameWrangler, an intuitive utility that facilitates naming a bunch of files at once.

No matter the file type, dropping it on the app’s interface should let you readily modify its name to your liking. As such, drag and drop any files you want, and start configuring your naming conventions.

Use your cursor and hold the left mouse button to select the parts of the files you wish to rename. Upon doing so, you can start typing to replace the text simultaneously across the selected files or use the built-in incremental or index naming schemes. You may also transform letter cases with a single click.

To prevent users from accidentally renaming file extensions, the Lock file extensions option is worth enabling in some circumstances. There’s also a Select extensions button, which can highlight them all for clarity.

The program worked well during my testing, despite crashing twice while I was trying to rename a few files. I appreciated the seamless way in which it integrated its renaming capabilities: simply holding your mouse button over what you wish to rename may seem obvious enough, but the implementation is the hard part.

FileNameWrangler is thus a software utility you can use for batch renaming workflows. Though I feel its interface scaling makes text look a little unclear at times, perhaps also due to the font used, it’s a solid application that can get the job done.
