In the eventuality that you attempted to move folders from a machine running Mac OS X to another running Windows, then you probably know all about the annoying invisible DS_Store files issues. FolderWasher is a lightweight application designed to help you delete all these files and maintain the directories clean so that you can find the data you need faster.

The tool comes with an old-school, but intuitive interface that is unlikely to give you any troubles. You can add a directory from the File menu or simply drag and drop it over the UI, after which you can specify if you prefer the app to archive the folder after processing and if you prefer to delete the Thumb.db as well.

The idea behind the application is to provide a simple solution for dealing with the Desktop Service Store files that become visible once you move a file to a Windows Machine. As a side note, the same occurs when you transfer directories from Windows to Mac OS X, but the equivalent file is dubbed Thumb.db. You are safe to use the tool on Macintosh computer to delete the aforementioned files as well.

While the app deletes all files whose names begin with period, you can add exceptions, an option that can be useful to skip important files, such as the htaccess ones.

It is important to note that the program deletes the files permanently and hence, once erased, you are unable to recover them. Considering that the app is designed to wipe all files whose name begin with a period, it is advisable that you take the time and add the ones you want to keep in the Exceptions list.
