File Renamer

File Renamer is a small-sized and portable application capable of renaming multiple files in bulk. It adds numbers to the new filenames automatically and offers support for AVI, BMP, DOC, GIF, JPEG, JPG, MOV, MP3, MPEG, MPG, TIF and TXT.

The whole program's wrapped in one .exe file that can be saved anywhere on the disk in order to seamlessly launch File Renamer. It can also be copied to a USB flash drive to run it on any PC with no previous installers. More importantly, it doesn't make any changes in the Windows registry. It's password-protected, so make sure to open the Readme file available in the downloaded package.

As far as the interface is concerned, the utility adopts an outdated window with a simple layout, where you can use the integrated tree view to explore disk directories and locate the files you want to rename. The drive root can be modified from a drop-down list.

These can be filtered by one of the previously mentioned formats. Only the selected files can be renamed, and there's an option for selecting all items from the list; the total number is displayed.

In order to rename the items, all you have to do is establish the base name; the new files are numerically incremented after applying modifications with one click. Although the program doesn't implement an option for previewing the new filenames, it's possible to undo the last operation, in order to restore the original filenames.

Renaming jobs were carried out fast in our evaluation, during which the tool remained light on system resources consumption. No error dialogs popped up and it didn't hang or crash.

On the other hand, File Renamer has limited options. For example, it doesn't support all types of files, regardless of their format, and it doesn't have additional renaming methods apart from numbers. Otherwise, it gets the job done and can be easily used.
