When it comes to file management, MTP devices can be a bit difficult to work with. A common example is the iPhone, where users can’t access their photos normally from their PC, which typically requires a dedicated software solution. This is due to how the files are mapped, and given iOS its walled garden, it’s not surprising to see Apple denying us from using File Explorer to read our photos and videos.

A solution such as MTPdrive can fix that for you. It works by mapping an MTP device to a drive letter, making it possible to access its contents with ease, granting you the prerogative to read files, and in some cases, write access is also supported.

Working with the program may seem a bit daunting initially, but after spending some time with it, it’s quite an intuitive one. Connecting your MTP device to your computer is the first step, and all that’s left is mapping a drive letter to it.

You’ll have to wait for the program to first recognize the connected device, however. This shouldn’t be a problem normally, but during my testing, I had to reconnect it a couple of times to get the app to finally detect it.

In any case, clicking Map will begin the mapping process. Your data will be grouped into folders, which you’ll be able to access as you see fit. I could view the multimedia files from my phone without any problems and was even able to delete some I had no use for.

It’s worth noting that you can choose to have the program map your MTP device automatically in the Settings menu. Aside from that, you can also designate a preferred drive letter for an easier time.

The Filesystem structure options can also be modified to some extent. Various structures can be used, and I appreciated that the program provided detailed information about each of them.

Noteworthy is also the Filename Format Builder menu, which lets users customize how their files are classified to make organization easier. This way, you can have the date of each picture included in its name, add directory separators, limit the number of digits of a file, and more.

MTPdrive works very well for what it’s supposed to do: the seamless drive mapping is worth appreciating, and so are the filesystem structure configurations, which bestow an added layer of convenience when dealing with lots of files.
