PrintFileInfo

Every file you create on your computer has a set of properties that can be easily accessed via its context menu. Its type, size, name, version, the name of the creator and its timestamp details are all there, but there is no way to save those properties in a list for usage with another application. Here to solve this issue, PrintFileInfo provides a lightweight tool that enables you to extract information about any executable or DLL file on your computer.

There is no standard user interface to PrintFileInfo, as it runs exclusively in the command console of Windows. Being a console app, you might think that it is more difficult to use but, in fact, its syntax is quite simple and the usage examples allow you to understand how it works in a jiffy.

To put it short, you have to run the main PrintFileInfo executable file (please make sure to run the appropriate edition for your 32-bit or 64-bit system) followed by the argument: the file you want to process. This command extracts the file properties of the DLL or EXE without executing it, evidently.

You get to see the product type (architecture – 32-bit or 64-it), its size in bytes, the product’s short and long names, the internal and the original filename, the file description, if any. Moreover, PrintFileInfo also reveals the versions of the file and the product, the name of the company that created it, legal copyright information, extra comments and, of course, the file’s timestamp: the date and time of the last modification.

While not mandatory to use, the extra options in PrintFileInfo allow you to run the application is quiet mode and display verbose information. If you don’t need the entire list of properties, know that PrintFileInfo can extract the file version or the timestamp only.

PrintFileInfo is a simple application with simple commands and a sole purpose: to allow the quick extraction of a file’s most relevant information. It works as promised but, on the downside, it would be nice to have it extract information from multiple files at the same time and export it to a local file.
