Rename Files

Rename Files is a tool made to help you easily modify names of files from a specified directory, which end with an extension or other string of characters defined by you. It's able to automatically append numbers to the start or end of the file names.

You can save the downloaded files anywhere on the hard disk or on a USB flash drive, and just click the executable to launch Rename Files. It doesn't make any changes to your Windows registry. However, it requires you to have .NET Framework installed.

The interface is intuitive but doesn't put any emphasis on graphical elements. It's possible to indicate the target directory, set the end characters to take into account when searching for files, and click a button to immediately get a list with all matches. Alternatively, you can leave this field empty to list all files.

Details include the name, format and location of each item. You can enter a new base name to be shared by all files, specify the starting number, instruct Rename Files to add numbers as prefix or suffix, as well as select the files before triggering the file renaming job.

It's possible to remove any item from the task, disable recursive directory listing, save the file list as a plain text document, or find out the number of total files in the list.

It carried out file renaming jobs quickly in our tests while remaining light on system resources consumption. On the other hand, it has some notable issues.

For instance, when trying to enter a new base name for the files, the tool removes the mouse pointer from the box and plays the Windows alert sound, making you think this is a forbidden action. It's necessary to click the "New Name" box for each character you want to add or remove.

On top of that, the "Select all" option doesn't work, the option to move the files to the parent folder is redundant, and it's mandatory to specify an end string to be able to keep the original file extensions when renaming the files.

Although this is a stable release, Rename Files acts like it got stuck in beta development, due to the issues we encountered. It's safer to look for alternative file renamers.
