Windows operating system deployments come in all different shapes and sizes, and this is valid for both the inherent characteristics of the system itself, as well as the medium and format onto which these are being deployed. Having the ability to determine the build characteristics before attempting an installation, can prove to be a valuable asset. Of course, there are several ways to do that, but specialized software, such as Windows Build Identifier, can provide users with a pre-installation insight into the build’s characteristics.

This application was developed in order to allow users to automatically detect the Windows operating system build and its characteristics, from a range of distribution mediums and formats.

The main working principle behind the application’s functionality revolves around gathering WIM information and parsing it to an XML format file, regardless of the format of the input. An evaluation of the found content is later on carried out and the relevant images are assessed in accordance with the XML file.

A system of pre-defined flags and processing indices is involved, which lets users know of the status of the pre-installation environment. A series of parameters, such as the major and minor versions, build number, delta version, and more, are then provided in the CMD.
