Fancy Thumb

Fancy Thumb is an application that gives you the possibility to customize your thumb drives when it comes to their names and icons. It gets integrated into the context menu and contains intuitive options. The tool can be used to assign names longer than the length permitted by FAT32 drives.

Setting it up takes minimal time and effort, since there are no unfamiliar buttons, mandatory software products or third-party components bundled.

After installation, the program is implemented into the Windows Explorer right-click menu, creating the "Decorate with Fancy Thumb" entry. The small and straightforward configuration panel can be brought up to the screen not only for removable devices, but also for local drives to customize settings. It gives you an overview of all options.

It's possible to edit the label and assign icons from images with the .ico filetype by resorting to the file browser. However, in order to commit modifications, it's necessary to reboot the computer. There are no other notable settings available here. The application doesn't have a button for restoring the configuration to default if you change your mind later on.

It left a small footprint on system performance, since it neded a low amount of CPU and RAM to function normally. The utility remained stable throughout its runtime, without causing the operating system to hang, crash or display error messages.

On the other hand, we expected richer customization options for removable and local drives, especially for those PC users looking for new ways to personalize their copy of Windows. On top of that, it's somewhat inconvenient to restart the workstation to be able to apply changes. We are also keeping in mind that Fancy Thumb hasn't received updates for a while.
