Ever had a folder or file that you couldn't delete because some process was hogging your taskbar? For some, the instinct is to repeat pressing the Delete key, with the hopes that the process will have been killed off by the time they press the same key for the 7th time, or trying to find the process themselves. Sometimes you succeed, sometimes you don't, but the whole thing can get frustrating really quick.
FileUnlocker exists to address these woes: simply and concisely, the tool adds the Unlock option in the Windows context menu, thereby allowing users to kill off any file or folder's corresponding processes, all in a single motion.
Setting this thing up involves virtually no fuss at all: unpack the archive, open the extracted file, then run the install.bat file with elevated privileges. There you have it — the program is now installed, and ready to be used. There's no interface, panel, or settings to go through: the tool manifests as the Unlock option in the context menu.
Right-click the file whose associated process you want to kill, then use the Unlock function. Thereafter, you'll get a pop-up to inform you of the processes that are to be killed, asking for your confirmation. The tool will then make quick work of the task, and you'll be able to make changes to the corresponding file without a problem.
Alternatively, users who wish to leverage this tool's functionality through a command line can do so through a simple argument: FileUnlocker.exe path -silent.
At its base, File Unlocker is a program that couldn't be any simpler: it integrates into the File Explorer context menu, granting one the option to quickly kill a process that prevents any changes to a file or folder.
What's new in File Unlocker 1.1:
- You can now use the tool from a command line with -silent (or -s) as a second argument to bypass the dialog window while the first argument is a path to file or folder you wish to unlock (i.e. FileUnlocker.exe path -silent).
- A key icon has been added that appears next to the 'Unlock' context menu item.
