Nefarius' Identinator

Nefarius' Identinator is a lightweight utility designed to provide a quick way to rewrite hardware identification properties of USB devices. More precisely, you can rewrite essential data such as the Compatible ID, Device ID and Hardware ID properties of USB gadgets connected to your PC. While it should work with most USB devices, take note that the Bluetooth compatibility is currently in the works.

According to the developer, the rewriting of the properties is possible due to the embedded nssidswap.sys bus filter driver and the .NET UI tool that allows you to modify it. Needless to say that the changes are instant and can even be applied during runtime. You could easily swap the function driver for a HID device on the fly.

Because the changes are happening at the driver level, this cannot be considered a flash tool. In fact, the app doesn’t flash any device, EEPROM or other USB reprogrammable sections. The chances are temporary and solely apply to the machine where Identinator is installed and configured.

It is important to note that due to the nature of the program, caution is advised when using it. Considering that the application alters essential components and how they are detected by the operating system, it comes with the risk of messing up your system.
