Firefox extension that resolves CNRI Handle (HDL) and Digital Object Identifier (DOI) URIs by forwarding requests to one of two proxy servers #Protocol handler #DOI protocol #Firefox extension #Handle #Handler #Protocol
Developed for older Firefox versions, Mozilla Handle/DOI Protocol Handler is a simple-to-use browser extension designed to resolve CNRI Handle (HDL) and Digital Object Identifier (doi) URIs.
The Handle system is integrated into Digital Object Architecture and facilitates safe methods for fixing Digital Object Identifiers in a network environment. Meanwhile, DOIs are unique strings made of letters, numbers and symbols, whose purpose is to identify web content and supply persistent links with its location for easy access. This process is performed automatically when publishing content online.
This add-on gets the job done by forwarding requests with schemes of HDL to any of the following two proxy servers via HTTP: http://hdl.handle.net/ (for HDL: URIs) or http://dx.doi.org/ (for DOI: URIs).
It's easy to install it, since all you have to do is copy the downloaded .xpi file to Firefox. Restarting the web browser may be necessary to apply modifications and use the extension. Although Mozilla Handle/DOI Protocol Handler is no longer in development, it can still be downloaded from Softpedia for Firefox versions 1.5 to 3.0.x. However, it doesn't work for newer editions of the web browser.
