7z is a compressed archive format based on the open-source LZMA compression which features high compression ratio and may use strong encryption.

This format also supports Unicode filenames and very large file sizes (up to 16,000,000,000 GB).

Initially implemented by Igor Pavlov's 7-Zip, there are currently numerous compression software applications which can open and create 7z archives.

Additionally, most of the applications that allow users to access 7z archives will also offer them the possibility to create new ones or modify already existing files.
