Millennium Digger is no longer supported, so it is now impossible to purchase the application. Nonetheless, you can still download it from Softpedia and use it with the limitations listed on this page.
Old video games were designed to be a lot more challenging than the ones we can enjoy today, especially arcade titles that required lightning-fast reflexes. Hence, most classic games can appear to be downright impossible nowadays in the age of tutorials and the auto-save feature. There are still some examples out there that try to keep the tradition going, but they are usually indie productions that do not always come to fruition.
Millennium Digger is a retro arcade game that recreates an older title with the same theme and a very similar name, only it features updated graphics and a few new modes to mix things up. In short, your task is to collect all the diamonds in every level, while digging through the ground and avoiding the enemies that follow you on a regular basis. As you manage to get further into the game, the levels get increasingly more difficult, and that's where all the fun is at.
You only need to use the directional keys in order to play the game, because you do not have any special abilities or skills. The main strategy is to collect the diamonds as efficiently as possible, while keeping a respectable distance between you and the enemies. It might be difficult to achieve sometimes, but the key is to think ahead and move quickly.
There are three different game modes, each one of which can provide you with a decent challenge. Hence, the Baby mode is a tad easier than the others, which makes it the perfect choice for beginners and newcomers. On the other hand, the classic mode features a different visual appearance entirely, which is reminiscent of the old Amiga game it emulates.
Speaking of which, the visual improvements are definitely there, it’s just that you may not be able to spot them nowadays. Although the game was released a long time after the original, a long time has passed since then as well. Hence, you’d be glad to know you do not have to deal with 8-bit graphics, but it’s not too far either. Thankfully, you can at least enjoy the pleasant soundtrack and be distracted by the gameplay.
All things considered, Millennium Digger might be a tad too challenging for today’s gaming scene, but some people should find it refreshing. As such, if you are aching for a bit of the old days, this can certainly be a game to feed your nostalgia.
