New in Rationale 1.4 (Jul 24, 2007)

  • Images - You can now increase the visual richness of your maps by adding images. Create your own icons to annotate a map, or make use of the many available free over the internet. Use portraits to identify the author of a particular claim or note. Or use photos as visual evidence. Insert images with the new "Image" ribbon tab. Or, with the built-in browser, you can drag pictures straight off the web onto the workspace. You can also copy and paste images from image editing programs. Images can be added to any item, claim, reason, objection, note or basis box.
  • Dialogue Mapping - Rationale now includes templates for IBIS style dialogue mapping. Dialogue maps can be used to record and clarify discussions concerning complex questions and decisions. The icons representing parts of a dialogue are located in Templates in the Building Panel, and include questions, ideas, decisions, references and more. Dialogue Mapping icons are used by by permission of the Knowledge Media Institute, Open University UK. Dialogue Mapping is an approach to facilitating meetings with IBIS developed by CogNexus Institute, USA.
  • New Essay Templates - The new 'letter to the editor' and 'issues' templates provide further guidance for structuring argumentative prose. The 'letter to the editor' template, in particular, is invaluable for highschool students. While the 'issues' template allows for more detailed consideration of an issue.
  • Repeat Stamp - Stamp multiple boxes with the same image, colour or evaluation using the Repeat Stamp. The Repeat Stamp is located on the Ribbon under Home Tab > Change, and also shows the last stamp used. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl R.
  • Editing Hints - When you select an empty box you now get a hint (in blue) as to what type of information should be entered in that box.
  • Improved Web Browsing - You can now enjoy faster web browsing as well as the convenience of a drop down list of recently visited sites.
  • Trim Button - The trim button helps you shrink your maps by removing excess white space from boxes. It is located on the Ribbon under Home Tab > Edit
  • Relaxed Levels - Tall boxes no longer create big gaps between levels, making maps more compact. You can restore the older strict behavior by checking "Enforce levels" on the Ribbon under View Tab > Map Layout: Show
  • Map Layout - All map changes are now animated, for more more impressive presentations. The old layout options have also been renamed to make them more intuitive. "Show path" is now "Ancestors", while "Show Context has become "Family". We've also included new options like "Decendants", "Parent" and "Children" (a great layout for evaluation).
  • Resizing - You can now grab the bottom-right corner of a box and resize height and width at the same time
  • New Drag Functions - Drag colours directly from the Grouping Pane into a box.
  • Drop a box between levels to push the lower level down.
  • Hold Ctrl and drag to copy text, images, boxes, and entire maps.
  • New Shortcuts - Press Ctrl Shift N to add a new Note to the currently selected box
  • Ctrl Mouse wheel scrolls the workspace (vertically).
  • Basis boxes are now allowed in Grouping mode
  • Shift-drag no-longer changes reasons into objections and vice versa.
  • Shift-drag now cancels box attachment and repulsion (previously Ctrl-drag)
  • Adding a new blank box no longer puts you straight into edit mode (with the flashing text cursor); instead you get the new hint text
  • Philosophical templates have moved to the Rationale Wiki under Templates.
