Getting a custom ringtone for your phone is one task that even a beginner user can accomplish without too much effort. With the appropriate software, you can easily chop the song to just the relevant piece you want.

The market is crawling with free applications specifically designed for this task. AVGO Free Ringtone Maker is another solution that might fit the bill.

As the name mentions, the program is free of charge and it is specifically designed to create phone ringtones.

The installation process does not require particular attention as no additional software is promoted; but this is not to say that the application is free of advertisements because the developer promotes other programs through AVGO Free Ringtone Maker’s interface.

Looks are not extraordinary but the layout is intuitive, with all the options and functions within easy reach.

One of the advantages when working with AVGO Free Ringtone Maker is that it can process both audio and video files. The list of supported file types includes RealMedia (RM, RAM, RMVB) and Windows Media (AVI, MPG, WAV, WMV, ASF) formats as well as MP3, OGG or FLAC.

The application makes available multiple profiles for exporting the ringtone, according to the device it is intended for. Unlike programs of the same feather, AVGO Free Ringtone Maker does not offer presets for specific phones, so you should know the audio format the device can render.

It can export the file to MP3, MMF, WAV, AMR, AWB and M4R (iTunes ringtone). However, unless you have an older phone model, you won’t go wrong with choosing MP3 as output.

There is no drag and drop support for loading the files, which makes adding the audio data a bit more difficult. Nevertheless, working with the application is still extremely simple.

As soon as the file is loaded, you can start cropping the part for the ringtone by simply marking the start and end position. You cannot set the marks by manually defining the time points, which would be what a more advanced user would require for increased accuracy of the selection.

The application can also set the trimming to a default 30-second cut, which is generally enough for a ringtone since most people already answer the phone in this interval. This can be moved to the exact point you want.

Although very minimalistic in terms of options, cutting the audio part you want is not all this ringtone maker can do. It offers the possibility to add a fade in and/or out effect to the piece. You decide on the length of the effect on a level from zero to 40 percent.

Furthermore, the sound file can be previewed before processing. This not only lets you check the accuracy of the trimming but also how the fade effect fits in. The built-in player is capable of rendering the whole music piece or just your selection.

Processing the file and storing it on the computer is a quick job that took less than ten seconds during our tests. At the end of the operation the program offers to launch iTunes (if available in the system) in order to import the ringtones (if you use an Android device, third-party software is needed for the job).

The application does support batch processing, with custom selection for each of the file, but we noticed that you cannot enable the 30-second maximum duration for the ringtone only for one entry. On the other hand, making ringtones of different lengths is no problem.

Configuring AVGO Free Ringtone Maker is an easy job since there are few options to tinker with. Apart from audio customizations specific for most profiles, the developer included the possibility to enable “fade in/out and fix” option. It is turned on by default and we did not notice any difference with it turned off.

As far as audio settings are concerned, these refer to sample rate (from 8kHz to 48kHz) and bitrate (from 16kbps to 320kbps) values for MP3, WAV and MMF formats.

The Good

It is free and easy to use, especially by beginner users. It includes profiles for specific types of files and you can set a fix, 30-second, duration for the ringtone.

The built-in audio player allows you to preview the selection before processing the file. You can apply fade in and/or out effect.

The Bad

There is no drag and drop support for easy loading of the music files. Enabling the 30-second ringtone limit is applied to all files in the list, not just the selected one(s).

Some users may find the promoting of other software from the developer a bit unpleasant.

The Truth

AVGO Free Ringtone Maker is not top of the class, but it reduces ringtone creation to just a couple of steps. It completes the process very fast and with insignificant system resource requirements. However, it would be nice to see more audio effects.
