A tweet posted by the official Windows Phone account yesterday hints at a change that sources close to Microsoft's plans revealed more than a month ago: the smartphone platform could soon be renamed to just Windows in an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the desktop OS.

The Windows Phone Twitter account, which will be renamed to Microsoft Lumia this week, revealed that the new username would be exclusively used for devices owned by the Redmond-based tech giant and launched under the new brand.

And still, those with a Windows Phone handset manufactured by a different company could still get in touch with Microsoft via the official @Windows account, it said.

Renaming Windows Phone to Windows would make sense at some level, but this decision could actually cause even more confusion given the fact that users might not be able to tell the difference between the operating systems powering smartphones and desktops.

Microsoft needs to educate customers over these operating systems if it really wants to rename Windows Phone, but such a plan would obviously need more time. The new name, however, might be disclosed in spring 2015, just before the unveiling of Windows 10 and Windows Phone 10, when other big changes are prepared, including a possible merger of the phone and the RT tablet platforms.
