Throughout the past decade, the more I read about the privacy compromises that have to be made when using many of the popular online services to browse the internet, interact with friends and backup your data over the cloud, the more interested I became in ways to mitigate the issue, which is how I encountered the concept of free and open-source software.

Fascinated by the incredible kindness, proficiency and unparalleled transparency with which this part of the tech community tackles projects when publishing the source code for others to contribute to or create their own spin-offs, I started researching and slowly replacing many proprietary services with privacy-centric alternatives.

In doing so, I realized how much I relied on consulting other people’s accounts of using the substitute programs through various forums, which is why I try to make the most of the opportunity of working at Softpedia to aid others on the same quest by providing insight into lesser known applications that respect the right to privacy.
