The Splish Splash package provides a pair of executables (splish and splash) that stream the audio from one PC to another. Play music on your laptop and have it come out the speakers of your home theater PC!
Splish Splash consists of two executables: - splish.exe captures the audio output from one PC and sends it to another PC on the network. - splash.exe receives audio from a PC running splish.exe and plays it on its own speakers.
- Turn the volume down low (just in case). - Open a command prompt (e.g. type "cmd" into the search box on the start menu and press enter). - Determine the IP address of the destination PC. One way to do this is to type "ipconfig". Look for the line that says "IPv4 Address". Remember this for later. - Type "cd c:\splishsplash". - Type "splash.exe" - You may be prompted by Windows Firewall whether to allow the connection. You should allow it only for private networks.
Now You should see: C:\splishsplash>splash.exe Waiting for connection on port 8265.
- Open a command prompt (e.g. type "cmd" into the search box on the start menu and press enter). - Type "cd c:\splishsplash". - Type "splish.exe 192.168.0.2" except substitute the IP of the destination PC (you found in step #3 above) instead of "192.168.0.2". - You may be prompted by Windows Firewall whether to allow the connection. You should allow it only for private networks.
You should see something like: C:\splishsplash>splish.exe 192.168.0.2 Connecting to 192.168.0.2:8265... Successfully connected. Streaming audio...
System requirements
- Windows default audio format must be configured to 44100Hz.
- Latency is around 500-1500ms to avoid glitches / buffering. Thus it's mostly only useful for music. You can't use it for video, or other cases when synchronization is important. Future versions may allow you to configure the target latency
- There's no authentication or security of any kind, so make sure you have a firewall between you and the internet.
- Probably not suitable for streaming over the internet or over low-bandwidth LAN's. Audio is sent completely raw at 44100Hz, 2 channels, 32-bit samples (i.e. about 350k/s of data).
What's new in Splish Splash 0.2 Alpha:
- Added pointer to Configuring Windows Default Audio Format in the error message if the sample rate isn't 44100.
- Changed splish.exe to connect only with IPv4 (not IPv6), since splash.exe only listens for IPv4 connections (resolves issue where connecting by hostname sometimes doesn't work).
