SimpleMarkdown

The Markdown markup language is widely used for writing content indented to be published on the web, as it relies on a simple, readable syntax and can be converted to HTML easily. There are many editors around for you to try, and the one we are reviewing today is one of the lighter ones out there.

SimpleMarkdown, as its name suggests, provides you with a basic platform for writing in Markdown and exporting content. It offers a pretty decent set of features, and its lightweight design can only be appreciated.

Most users should be able to get the hang of this markup language quickly enough, as the syntax is very simple. Moreover, the document can even be read in its original form, making editing much easier.

SimpleMarkdown also helps you out, as it enables you to insert various syntax elements with a single mouse click or keyboard shortcut. However, it would have been great if all the hotkeys were documented.

Naturally, no such application is complete without a live preview function, which is thankfully included in SimpleMarkdown. It can be enabled or disabled at any time, and the panel dimensions are also customizable.

Aside from the word and character counters, there aren’t any other noteworthy features to mention. This shouldn’t be a problem for users who like to keeps things simple, however, and you can easily export your article as HTML or print it directly when you are done.

The user interface is certainly not disappointing, though it does look somewhat outdated. Also, it would have been great if you had the option of hiding the toolbar and status bar, a feature that many other similar applications do offer.

You can choose between several alternative color themes for your document, but these only apply to the live preview panel. For those who like to work late at night, a darker background for the Markdown editing panel would have been a great addition.

Overall, SimpleMarkdown stays true to its name, and it is a good choice for users who need a lightweight, reliable Markdown editor for their projects. A little work is still required, but if you are looking for a simple, no-nonsense Markdown utility, it certainly ticks a lot of the right boxes.
